BIOGRAPHY
Jörgen Axelvall is a photographer and artist from
Sweden currently based in Tokyo.
Before moving to Tokyo in 2011, Axelvall lived and
worked in New York City for 15 years.
In September 2013, Axelvall was the international
winner of the prestigious New Exposure Award
presented by US Vogue and Bottega Veneta. The
exhibition and award ceremony was held at Openhouse
Gallery in Soho, New York City.
In March 2014, Jörgen Axelvall published his first
monograph together with an exhibition and installation
at Idol Aoyama in Tokyo, titled Instant Moments, and in
June 2014, Instant Moments was shown at the Swedish
Embassy in Tokyo.
In October 2014, Axelvall had a solo exhibition titled
Always Looking through Glass at 0fr. TOKYO Gallery.
In November 2014, Axelvall’s seven-year-long art
project I was looking for Park Hyatt Tokyo materialized
into an exhibition at Park Hyatt Tokyo with the
simultaneous release of a limited edition photo box,
designed and art directed by world-renowned book
designer Satoshi Machiguchi.
On opening night it was announced I was looking for
Park Hyatt Tokyo was chosen as a Jury Selection by the
18th Japan Media Arts Festival and was again shown at
the National Arts Center in Tokyo in February 2015.

発表し、IDOL青山での写真展と併せて行いました。
2014年6月、『Instant Moments』は東京の
スウェーデン大使館でも展示されました。
2014年10月、『Always Looking through Glass』という
単独写真展を 0fr. TOKYO Galleryにて行いました。
2014年11月、 自身が7年間かけて
撮影したアートプロジェクト
『 I was looking for Park Hyatt Tokyo』の写真展を、
その被写体であるパークハイアット東京で実現させました。
そして世界をベースに第一線で活躍する
ブックデザイナー町口覚の監修による
限定フォトボックスもリリースされました。
写真展の初日、この作品が第18 回 文化庁メディア芸術祭において、
審査委員会推薦作品に選出されたことが発表され、
2015年2月 『 I was looking for Park Hyatt Tokyo 』は
新国立美術館でも展示されました。

2003-2005
Worked with the design of Steven Sebring’s book Bygone Days (published 2005), an award-winning collection of photographs of rural life in South Dakota from 1904–1959.
2006-2007
Worked with Steven Sebring’s book Lalanne (2006), a book of photographs of sculptors Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne and their respective works of art, released in conjunction with their 2007 New York exhibition at the Paul Kasmin Gallery.
2002-2008
Worked on the movie Patti Smith: Dream of Life, directed by Steven Sebring and produced by Steven Sebring and PBS. In Patti Smith: Dream of Life, Jörgen Axelvall is credited as assistant camera as well as a sound engineer. The movie won several awards, among others “Best CinematographyxAward” at the Sundance Film Festival where it was also nominated for the “Grand
Jury Award”. At the Durban International Film Festival it won “Best Documentary”.

Produced, filmed and edited a visually poetic, documentary style film, titled Sometime in Tokyo, following Patti Smith (and Steven Sebring) in Japan. Sometime in Tokyo was added to the Japanese DVD of Patti Smith: Dream of Life, released by Transformer Inc. in Japan in 2009.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life was nominated for a “Prime Time Emmy” at the Emmy Awards in USA.

present Started collaborating with Tama Art University artist Nile Koetting on various photography, book and video projects and editorials for numerous magazines.

Hyatt Tokyo. On opening night it was announced that the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival had chosen I was looking for Park Hyatt Tokyo as a Jury Selection.

I was looking for Park Hyatt Tokyo was shown at the National Arts Center in Roppongi, Tokyo, together with other award winning works of the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival. The exhibition attracted some 60,000 visitors.
